Book Advice

512739Books and travel go together naturally; both are journeys: one mental, the other physical. Reading a book while traveling is a journey within a journey, an activity much more rich and rewarding than any of the two undertaken separately.

This considerations come to mind because a couple of days ago I noticed that Borri Books, the bookshop located inside the Station Termini has a small but very interesting selection of books about Italy and ancient Rome.

The whole third floor is dedicated to books in foreign languages (English, Spanish, French, German and Russian) with the English section being the largest covering topics that range from humor to literature and current affairs. The Ancient Rome section (the second aisle counting from left to right with the elevator or stairs behind you) includes many rather academic books but also volumes that offer useful information using a very light tone, like the one pictured here that promises to teach you  “the Latin you need to know for surviving the 21st century”.

Borri Books is located inside the Termini Station and is open from 8.00 am until 10.00 pm, and from 8.00 am until 22.00 pm on Sundays and holidays.

Titian, a Venetian master in Rome

People visiting Rome shouldn’t miss the opportunity to visit the current exhibition about Titian at the Scuderie del Quirinale. The aim is to offer a comprehensive vision of the work of one of the most important Venetian masters whose style influenced generations of painters and also to show the results of the most recent research about the paintings on display.

The Scuderie museum is located at Via XXIV Maggio 16 , and can be easily reached from Yes Hotel or Hotel Des Artistes taking the bus 40 from the Station Termini (get off at the Station Nazionale/ Quirinale)

You might  have already  walked enough through the streets of  Rome and visited any possible museum or art exhibition,  and while you are trying to quench your thirst with a bottle of water under the shadow of a tree you are wondering how nice it would be to dive into the sea and relax on a beach not far from Rome.

Below you will find some of the beaches located near Rome that you can reach by train and enjoy your swimming.

The nearest one is called Ostia, mostly frequented by Romans looking for a break from the daily stress of the city. If you walk along the beach you will find another beach called Torvajanica,

where you can find more space but is less organized. To arrive at Ostia is very simple:  go to Termini station and take the line B (the blue one) , get off at Piramide – Ostiense stop and from there you have a train that takes  you directly to Ostia  ( Station Ostia Lido; you use the same ticket from the metro). Pay attention when you leave from there  because the trains stop about 22:00 and there is the risk to remain stranded.

Another beach near Rome is Sperlonga, more beautiful but far from the center. The water there is very clean and to take sun you can choose between the plastic chairs you can rent on the beach or to use your  own towel, the prices are not very high if you decide to rent a chair. If you visit the center of Sperlonga and want to have dinner or a drink, pay attention on the prices because they can be a bit high in some places.

To reach Sperlonga is very easy , go to the Termini station and take the train for Sperlonga , you get off at Stazione Fondi- Sperlonga from where you have a shuttle that takes you directly to the beach for the cost of one Euro per person.

Enjoy and relax!!!
