Crosby, Stills & Nash in Rome

crosby_stills_nash

It was more than rock or folk. It was more than the sum of elements from the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and the Hollies, some of the most influential bands of the 60’s and 70’s. Crosby, Stills & Nash was way more than the sum of its parts, as is always the case with legendary groups.

David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash first got together in 1969 and were joined in 1970 by Neil Young, also a former member of Buffalo Springfield and a rock and roll legend on his own right. The affair beetwen the trio and Young was on-and-off but with and without him the band has earned a foremost place in the rock and roll canon.

The original trio will be touring the United States and Europe this year and will reach Italy this summer. They’ll stop by in Rome July 19 to offer a concert at the Auditorium Parco della Musica.

The Auditorium, designed by famous Italian Architect Renzo Piano, is located at Viale Piero de Coubertain, and can be easily reached from our hotel, located near the station Termini: just take the red subway line until Flaminio and then take the tram 2 and get off at the stop “Apollodoro”.

A Summer Under The Shadow Of The Colosseum

tajoPeople visiting Rome this summer can’t complain for lack of entertainment options. Besides the SoyLatino Festival, Rock in Roma,  Luglio Suona Bene at the Auditorium Parco della Musica and the New 900 Lab open-air club, visitors will be able to enjoy the festival All’Ombra del Colosseo (Under the Shadow of the Colosseum) that will take place at the enchanting Parco del Celio, located just beside the famous monument and a very nice place to visit on its own right.

The festival features mostly Italian comedians (in fact the motto this year is “Che Tajo””, Roman for “So funny!”) , so you might not be interested in the performances unless you have a pretty good grasp of Italian. However, the atmosphere will be worth it and besides, an open air restaurant and club has just been opened so you will be able to enjoy the evening through the universal languages of food and music!

The Parco del Celio is located almost literally under the shade of the Colosseum, a short subway ride away from Hotel Des Artistes or Yes Hotel. The festival will run from June 30 to September 8, 2013.

Rome’s Party Bus

fashion_bus1

The other night I was waiting to catch my bus to get back home at the Station Termini. There are many things you can expect to see there after midnight, but a glowing flamingo-pink bus with people dancing inside is not one of them. After convincing myself that Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters (link for the lazy) disbanded a long time ago I decided to take a mental note and inquire further into the matter for the profit of our readers.

Turns out that the flamboyant bus is the Fashion Bus, a club on wheels you can rent to celebrate whatever you deem worth celebrating, and if you are the type who considers seriously to rent it I’m sure you are in no shortage of reasons. According to their website a 3-hour party for 25 people with snacks, music and illimited drinks would cost you 700Eur on weekdays or 800Eur on Friday,. Saturday or Sunday. Reasonable, if you ask me.

Rome, the Ruthless

leonecheazzannaSymbols have a life of their own: their associations with certain concepts is very hard to break once we establish it. That’s why I was suprised to learn that before the famous she-wolf became the symbol of Rome, the most iconic sculpture associated with the Eternal City was that of a lion attacking a horse. Back in the day it was considered a symbol of the strenght and ruthlessness of the city.

Now the sculpture will come back to the Capitoline museums after a thorough restoration and a tour of the USA. Don’t miss the chance to admire the statue to learn more about how Rome thinks (or used to think) about itself.

The Azaleas of the Spanish Steps

Living in Rome is full of small joys and one of our favorites is to see the city bloom in April, as if waking up from its winter sleep.

The ritual sign that let you know officialy that spring has arrived are the Azaleas of the Spanish Steps. Every year for the last 75 years the staircase is decorated towards the end of April with flowers that contribute to the feeling of joy that pervades the city when winter is left behind.

Leonard Cohen in Rome

Leonard-Cohen

There are few singers as talented and enigmatic as Leonard Cohen and whose work keeps eliciting so much interest after a career that spans more tha 40 years.

Mr Cohen was already an accomplished poet when his first record, The Songs of Leonard Cohen, saw the light in 1967 and indeed his attitudes towards art and fame are more those of a writer or a mystic poet that those of a rockstar. A New Yorker’s recent review of one of his performances portrayed him as an elder sage, not singing but uttering words with a voice that told itself stories through timbre and emphasys only.

mr Cohen will be performing at the Centrale Live Foro Italico July 7, 2013 at 21:00 PM. To get there from Yes Hotel or Hotel Des Artistes,  take the Bus 910 from the station Termini and get off at the stop ” LGT THAON DI REVEL/FORO ITALICO”; then follow this map.
