Villa Borghese and the “Temple of Asclepius”

One of the must visit places in Rome that combines nature, pleasure, history and physical excercise. You can spent a lot of hours walking, drinking coffee etc. You can ride your bike and enjoy! The Villa is a great place to cycle around and the cafe’s are definitely worth stopping at while taking in the scenery. It’d also be a great place for a picnic, however, there’s not a whole lot else to keep you entertained. It’s only a short walk from the Spagna metro station and the Spanish Steps though so it’s definitely worth stopping at if you’re in the area.

The lake is circled by the walking path “Viale del Lago,” but you won’t be able to miss the centerpiece – “Temple of Asclepius.” Asclepius  was the Greek god of medicine and healing – exactly what your legs will need after all this time exploring Rome & Italy!IMG_6694

From Piazza del Popolo - The wide open Piazza is very popular with Romans as well as tourists, for its beautiful statuary and Egyptian obelisk. To the east of the Piazza is the massive Borghese Gardens, a quiet green spot among the big city hustle and bustle. This park is great for strolling, jogging, etc, and I believe you can rent a bicycle to ride around on. On the east side of the park is the most excellent Villa Borghese, a prime site to view art, especially, in my opinion, sculpture. There is no lack of magnificent art in Rome, but don’t miss this place.

Andy Warhol in Rome

Warhol-Campbell_Soup-1-screenprint-1968From April 18 to September 28 2014, Palazzo Cipolla, Via Del Corso 320, Rome.

Andy Warhol by Brant Foundation is a rare opportunity for the public to be able to see one of the most important groups of works by the artist father of American Pop Art, collected not by a simple collector, but a character, Peter Brant, a close friend of Warhol, with whom he shared the years artistically and culturally vibrant New York in the 60’s and 70’s. Warhol was only twenty years old in 1967 Peter Brant bought his first work of Warhol, a drawing of the famous Campbell‘s Soup, starting what would become one of the most important contemporary art collections in the world.

Through masterpieces and works by lesser-known but equally amazing, as a series of Polaroid never seen before in Europe, the exhibition tells the Brant Foundation is not just the star of Warhol’s art world and the market but also the intimate Warhol, friend, the man.

fiera-di-roma-sposa-2011

There is a very special niche for tourism in Rome: wedding tourism.

Many couples chose the Eternal City to take their vows, which as you can imagine is not a simple operation: involves booking hotels, organizing conflicting schedules and flights, but the memories are worth it!

You will have the chance to not only get ideas but also to buy items that will make that special occasion even more unique.

Roma Sposa will take place September 26-29 at the Anteprima Roma Sposa: quattro giorni di moda e tendenza all’insegna del wedding
Palazzo dei Congressi
, which can be easily reached from Yes Hotel or Hotel Des Artistes taking the blue subway line from Termini (get off at the station EUR Fermi).

Book Advice

512739Books and travel go together naturally; both are journeys: one mental, the other physical. Reading a book while traveling is a journey within a journey, an activity much more rich and rewarding than any of the two undertaken separately.

This considerations come to mind because a couple of days ago I noticed that Borri Books, the bookshop located inside the Station Termini has a small but very interesting selection of books about Italy and ancient Rome.

The whole third floor is dedicated to books in foreign languages (English, Spanish, French, German and Russian) with the English section being the largest covering topics that range from humor to literature and current affairs. The Ancient Rome section (the second aisle counting from left to right with the elevator or stairs behind you) includes many rather academic books but also volumes that offer useful information using a very light tone, like the one pictured here that promises to teach you  “the Latin you need to know for surviving the 21st century”.

Borri Books is located inside the Termini Station and is open from 8.00 am until 10.00 pm, and from 8.00 am until 22.00 pm on Sundays and holidays.

You might  have already  walked enough through the streets of  Rome and visited any possible museum or art exhibition,  and while you are trying to quench your thirst with a bottle of water under the shadow of a tree you are wondering how nice it would be to dive into the sea and relax on a beach not far from Rome.

Below you will find some of the beaches located near Rome that you can reach by train and enjoy your swimming.

ostiaSpiaggia

The nearest one is called Ostia, mostly frequented by Romans looking for a break from the daily stress of the city. If you walk along the beach you will find another beach called Torvajanica,

6895579037_b4bebe666d_z

where you can find more space but is less organized. To arrive at Ostia is very simple:  go to Termini station and take the line B (the blue one) , get off at Piramide – Ostiense stop and from there you have a train that takes  you directly to Ostia  ( Station Ostia Lido; you use the same ticket from the metro). Pay attention when you leave from there  because the trains stop about 22:00 and there is the risk to remain stranded.

sperlonga

Another beach near Rome is Sperlonga, more beautiful but far from the center. The water there is very clean and to take sun you can choose between the plastic chairs you can rent on the beach or to use your  own towel, the prices are not very high if you decide to rent a chair. If you visit the center of Sperlonga and want to have dinner or a drink, pay attention on the prices because they can be a bit high in some places.

To reach Sperlonga is very easy , go to the Termini station and take the train for Sperlonga , you get off at Stazione Fondi- Sperlonga from where you have a shuttle that takes you directly to the beach for the cost of one Euro per person.

Enjoy and relax!!!
