ROME – A GREEN CITY

ROME – A GREEN CITY

casina-delle-civette

Rome offers a wide range of opportunities to immerse yourself in charming public parks and refresh in green nature in the summer season

Rome is surrounded by a wide  countryside  known as Agro Romano, characterized by rustic  landscapes and  agricultural activities . Inside the city itself archaeological ruins  of Ancient Rome (Forum, Circus Maximus, Terme di Caracalla, Parco degli Acquedotti)   form green spaces  fully integrated into the urban fabric.

Other oasis of nature are created by  parks of historic Villas (Medici, Farnese, Este Tivoli, Borghese, Ada, Doria Pamphili, villa  Ada) built on the tops of hills and surrounded  by ornamental gardens

Villa Doria Pamphili  is one of the largest and most fascinating  villa in the city  and is located on the Gianicolo, near the Porta San Pancrazio.

Villa Borghese  the most famous Roman villa, due to its very central location near the Spanish Steps and Via Veneto, once the very heart of the “Dolce Vita”. Inside Villa Borghese you’ll find the Galleria  Borghese art collection that  includes paintings, sculptures and antiques. Among the most famous pieces of art, we can name the masterpieces by Gian Lorenzo Bernini: his “Rape of Proserpine“, “Daphne and Apollo” and “David“.

Villa Ada Savoia is situated in the northeastern part of the city. This property was once the estate of the House of Savoy.   After the fall of the Italian monarchy, this enchanting park became a public property of the Italian state. An area of the park hosts the Embassy and the Council of the Egyptian Republic. It remains one of the most pleasant Rome parks for a walk. During the summer season a music festival called “Rome meets the World” take place in the park, here all the info: Roma incontra il Mondo.

Villa Torlonia  belongs to the Torlonia family. It was designed by the well known architect, Giuseppe Valadier. It was abandoned for a certain time until Mussolini used it as his state residence for a couple of decades. After 1945, it was again abandoned, until a recent restoration gave back all the beauty to the villa, now open to the public.

How can you make  your summer stay in Rome even more comfortable and appealing?

Maybe tasting delicious Italian gelato and  spending a romantic evening at an outdoor terrace of a restaurant after a  daily journey to the beach? Why not ? This could be the best way to complete the pleasure of visiting the Eternal City

There are plenty of great beaches   easy reachable from the Capital. Here you have a few:

1) Anzio

Anzio is  50 miles south of Rome. It has  long sandy beach along the entire length of the town, backed by the imposing ruins of the Emperor Nero’s seaside villa. From Rome, you can take the train from Roma Termini towards Nettuno, Anzio is the second last stop, and the journey takes approximately one hour.

2) Sperlonga

A little further south lies Sperlonga. The waters are warm and crystal-clear. This is one of the most beautiful beaches near Rome

How to get there: Hop on a regional train from Roma Termini heading towards Naples and get off at the station Fondi-Sperlonga, about an hour and 15 minutes from Rome (not all trains stop here so make sure yours does in advance!). From there a short shuttle bus ride will take you to the town and beaches. Get your bus ticket in the train station’s bar.

4) Santa Severa

This beach is on the north side of Rome at  50 kilometres from the city and is  overlooked by an imposing castle! The water is good, if not quite as crystalline as in southern Lazio.

How to get there: Take a regional train from Roma Termini heading to Civitavecchia and get off at Santa Severa, about an hour from Rome. From the station you’ll have to walk about 10 minutes to get to the beach.

5) Santa Marinella

One stop further north from Santa Severa comes the town of Santa Marinella. Here the water is usually calm and surprisingly warm and is  ideal for families.

How to get there: Take a regional train from Roma Termini heading to Civitavecchia and get off at Santa Marinella, about an hour from Rome.

6) Ostia

Ostia is the beach of Rome. The water quality is not so good   but there is always a fun atmosphere due to the high number of bars and restaurants, and if you want to see Romans behaving on the seaside   this is the place to go.

How to get there: Take the metro B (blue) line to Piramide. From here change onto the commuter train to Ostia from adjoining Ostiense station. All you have to do from the metro is change platforms – just follow the signs. The train ride to Ostia is also covered by day or week passes on Rome’s transport system, so if you have one of these you won’t need another ticket.

IDES OF MARCH || 15 March – Julius Caesar will “die” again

IDES OF MARCH || 15 March – Julius Caesar will “die” again

On March 15th, from 2:00 pm, in the Sacred Area of Largo Argentina in Rome will be played the assassination of Julius Caesar.

The theatrical company ” Gruppo Storico Roma ”  will perform the reunion of the Senate, the discussions of the conspirators and the bloody murder of the great Roman leader.

The funeral procession will lead the public to the Roman Forum, where will be proposed other theatrical insertions dedicated to the characters close to the “Divo Giulio”. We will listen to thewords of Calpurnia, Caesar’s bride, of Brutus,  before friend and then a traitor, and many others.

Idi_2012-12

It was March of 44 B.C, Julius Caesar was preparing for a meeting with the Senate unaware of a conspiracy that would have killed him, organized by  personalities related to the Senate of Rome, including the famous Brutus (Marco Giunio Bruto) and Cassio (Gaius Cassio Longino).

The great Caesar was assassinated with several stabs while he was in the Theater of Pompeo.

He was killed because over the years he had become more and more powerful, concentrating on himself several charges and menacing the authority and power of the Senate.

His death became one of the most famous episodes of Roman antiquity.

According to someone it became the symbol of the murder of a tyrant in the name of the republic, as for example in the bust of Brutus sculpted by Michelangelo

To others Brutus and Cassius became the symbol of betrayal (Dante, example, put Brutus  in the 9th level of Hell, the lowest level, in the mouth of Satan together with Judas).
Largo di Torre Argentina is at just 10 minutes bus journey from Termini station or walking distance from the main sights: ask our staff at  YES HOTEL ROME for more details!
