EVEN IF ETERNAL… ROME HAS A BIRTHDAY

EVEN IF ETERNAL… ROME HAS A BIRTHDAY

Rome is just about to celebrate the 2768th year after her birth. Public events will take place starting from April 19th, having their peak on April 21st: this is the date that, according to first century historian Marcus Terentius Varro, should be taken as the actual foundation day by Romulus in 753 BC.
The tradition to celebrate the fact goes back to the Roman age of course; after many-century interruption, it was rivived in 1870.
A number of performAnces are scheduled, most of them by Gruppo Storico Romano, a society which has been looking after faithful historical reenactments (battles, plays, ceremonies, dances) for the past twenty years.
To begin with, on April 19 a parade of 2,000 customed “Romans” will reach Circo Massimo at 11am, after a fire-lighting ceremony fixed there likewise at 10.00am.
But it’s rigorously on April 21st, at 4pm, that the Tracciato del solco will be performed, i.e. the trench-digging ritual with which Romulus founded the city, legend says.
It’s not over yet. Mayor Ignazio Marino announced a couple of special surprises, such as the powering on of the Forum’s new lighting design by Oscar-winning director of photography Vittorio Storaro and, last but not least, an event to be enjoyed with augmented reality glasses.

ROME WEARS GREEN FOR ST. PATRICK!

ROME WEARS GREEN FOR ST. PATRICK!

St. Patrick’s Day means big news this year: for the first time the Eternal City will be part of the event promoted by Tourism Ireland and the Ireland embassy, the Global Greening! On this special occasion indeed the Colosseum will wear green lights, starting from tonight March 16th at 7.30 pm. Other 86 famous landmarks in the world will homage the most renowned Irish festivity: Niagara Falls, the Christ the Redeemer’s statue in Rio de Janeiro, the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, the London Eye and the Cibeles Fountain in Madrid only to name a few.
But it’s tomorrow, March 17th, that both the religious and wordly celebrations will take place: at 10 am at St. Patrick’s Church (via Boncompagni 31, metro stop Barberini) Cardinal Prosper Grech will officiate the Mass for Lá Fhéile Pádraig, while in the late morning the IrishFilmFesta will be officially launched in the presence of Irish authorities. The Festival (come to the 8th edition) will take place from March 26th to 29th at Casa del Cinema in Villa Borghese (metro sto Flaminio) and will showcase several films, short films and documentaries all rigorously made in Ireland, a special part being dedicate to works in Irish Gaelic language.
All day long both cheering Irish expats and Green Island lovers will be livening up the most popular pubs of the centre.

AMERICAN THANKSGIVING DAY IN ROME

AMERICAN THANKSGIVING DAY IN ROME

On the last Thursday of November it traditionally falls one of the most important public holidays in the USA: Thanksgiving Day. Despite its birth dates back Christian Protestant England, its American roots are conventionally identified with the harvest celebrations which would have been performed by the first Pilgrims in 1621 in the town of Plymouth. Since then, the meals cooked upon this festivity changed with time passing (at that stage, for instance, potatoes and sweet potatoes where not yet so regular in the English diet; sugar, requested by the cranberry sauce, was still too expensive, and pumpkin pie was suffering the lack of crust ingredients): today we have a menu where roasted turkey can’t be missing.
To embrace the spirit of its American visitors, Rome will be celebrating as well on 27 November 2014 with special arrangements in restaurants, pubs and places such as Palazzo Sciarra (where Norman Rockwell’s exhibit is on), and Cinecittà World (the biggest amusement park on Italian cinema industry).
