When in Rome , just party like an Italian ! Here some suggestions of what you can do :)

c700x420

1 * Cenone (  New  Year’s Eve dinner)

One of the most common way to celebrate the New Year ‘s  Eve in Italy, is to have a plentiful dinner at home with family and  the beloved  ones

Traditional dishes that can’t be missed are Lentils and Cotechino ( pork sausages ). Both  Cotechino  and Lentils represent abundance since the Roman  times.

Eating  lentils the night of  New Year’s Eve symbolizes the wish of prosperity and fortune for the new year. This tradition comes  from the Romans, who used to donate a  leather bag  containing lentils, with the wish that they would be transformed into coins.

If you are a tourist , many restaurants offer a New Year’s menu, excellent in quality and tradition !

Just remember to book ahead.

2 * New Year’s Eve outdoor.

Another common way to celebrate New Year’s Eve is to party in the heart of the towns. Concerts and streets shows are organized everywhere  in  Italy, both in small villages and in big cities.

In Rome you will find 24 hours no-stop shows. Free theatre and dance performances with street artists all around the city center.

Along the Tiber there will be the greatest fun as well as around Circo Massimo and Coliseum area, where after midnight will perform the big Italian artist Vinicio Capossela !

At midnight you can watch the fabulous fireworks over the Coliseum. UNMISSABLE !

3* Disco Party  !

Still not tired? What about going dancing till dawn ?!

Here’ s a list of discos where you can dance all night long , but also book there a dinner!

Just remember to book and pay in advance

We wish you a joyful end of the Year and Great start of the new one!

Jewish Ghetto in Rome

Jewish Ghetto in Rome

The ghetto was projected to lock up and control the Jews minority  in 1555  by Pope Paul IV on 14th of July

The papal bull  imposed economic and freedom restrictions to the jews . This oppression continued for 315 years until its abolition in 1870 (reunification of Italy).

At present, the Ghetto has become an attractive area full of shops , bakeries and kosher restaurants, bakeries and shops.

Kosher “philosophy” is the basis of Jewish cuisine. Kosher is a set of rules, of religious nature and origins, on which is based the nutrition of Jews.

Absoloutely not to miss,  the artichokes cooked Jewish style (only in March).

Major tourist attractions in the ghetto are: Portico di Ottavia, Ponte Fabricio (originally called Jews’ Bridge), Jewish Museum of Rome, the Synagogue of Emancipation and Santa Maria della Pietà.

Largo 16 Ottobre 1943 is a square in remembrance to the suffering of the ghetto’s residents during the second world war and the nazi-fascist years.

The fascinating ghetto is located on the east of river Tiber, facing the Vatican. It is, easily accessible by buses and trams.

When  staying at Yes Hotel you can reach the Ghetto by bus n. 492 or bus n. 70 and stop at Torre Argentina

From there just walk a few minutes, you will enjoy !

PIZZA, EGGS, SALAMI: THE ITALIAN EASTER BREAKFAST

PIZZA, EGGS, SALAMI: THE ITALIAN EASTER BREAKFAST

No less than Christmas time, Easter brings to Italian tables a huge variety of homemade food, most of them predictably including bread & eggs.
But every region has got its own peculiar tradition which is reflected in names, so according to where you are these days in Italy you will be served Easter pizza, or Easter focaccia, etc.
Those of you in Rome will make sure to enjoy the gargantuan Roman Easter breakfast, made of hard-boiled eggs, cheese, Easter pizza (a type of highly leavened pizza as tall as a panettone), a particular variety of salami called corallina (that in the past was produced exclusively during Easter time), and wine!
Don’t hesitate to ask our staff at Yes Hotel for recommendations on the best Easter breakfast in the area!

AMERICAN THANKSGIVING DAY IN ROME

AMERICAN THANKSGIVING DAY IN ROME

On the last Thursday of November it traditionally falls one of the most important public holidays in the USA: Thanksgiving Day. Despite its birth dates back Christian Protestant England, its American roots are conventionally identified with the harvest celebrations which would have been performed by the first Pilgrims in 1621 in the town of Plymouth. Since then, the meals cooked upon this festivity changed with time passing (at that stage, for instance, potatoes and sweet potatoes where not yet so regular in the English diet; sugar, requested by the cranberry sauce, was still too expensive, and pumpkin pie was suffering the lack of crust ingredients): today we have a menu where roasted turkey can’t be missing.
To embrace the spirit of its American visitors, Rome will be celebrating as well on 27 November 2014 with special arrangements in restaurants, pubs and places such as Palazzo Sciarra (where Norman Rockwell’s exhibit is on), and Cinecittà World (the biggest amusement park on Italian cinema industry). Ask Yes Hotel staff for full programme on events & venues!

Villa Borghese and the “Temple of Asclepius”

One of the must visit places in Rome that combines nature, pleasure, history and physical excercise. You can spent a lot of hours walking, drinking coffee etc. You can ride your bike and enjoy! The Villa is a great place to cycle around and the cafe’s are definitely worth stopping at while taking in the scenery. It’d also be a great place for a picnic, however, there’s not a whole lot else to keep you entertained. It’s only a short walk from the Spagna metro station and the Spanish Steps though so it’s definitely worth stopping at if you’re in the area.

The lake is circled by the walking path “Viale del Lago,” but you won’t be able to miss the centerpiece – “Temple of Asclepius.” Asclepius  was the Greek god of medicine and healing – exactly what your legs will need after all this time exploring Rome & Italy!IMG_6694

From Piazza del Popolo - The wide open Piazza is very popular with Romans as well as tourists, for its beautiful statuary and Egyptian obelisk. To the east of the Piazza is the massive Borghese Gardens, a quiet green spot among the big city hustle and bustle. This park is great for strolling, jogging, etc, and I believe you can rent a bicycle to ride around on. On the east side of the park is the most excellent Villa Borghese, a prime site to view art, especially, in my opinion, sculpture. There is no lack of magnificent art in Rome, but don’t miss this place.
