casina-delle-civette

Rome offers a wide range of opportunities to immerse yourself in charming public parks and refresh in green nature in the summer season

Rome is surrounded by a wide  countryside  known as Agro Romano, characterized by rustic  landscapes and  agricultural activities . Inside the city itself archaeological ruins  of Ancient Rome (Forum, Circus Maximus, Terme di Caracalla, Parco degli Acquedotti)   form green spaces  fully integrated into the urban fabric.

Other oasis of nature are created by  parks of historic Villas (Medici, Farnese, Este Tivoli, Borghese, Ada, Doria Pamphili, villa  Ada) built on the tops of hills and surrounded  by ornamental gardens

Villa Doria Pamphili  is one of the largest and most fascinating  villa in the city  and is located on the Gianicolo, near the Porta San Pancrazio.

Villa Borghese  the most famous Roman villa, due to its very central location near the Spanish Steps and Via Veneto, once the very heart of the “Dolce Vita”. Inside Villa Borghese you’ll find the Galleria  Borghese art collection that  includes paintings, sculptures and antiques. Among the most famous pieces of art, we can name the masterpieces by Gian Lorenzo Bernini: his “Rape of Proserpine“, “Daphne and Apollo” and “David“.

Villa Ada Savoia is situated in the northeastern part of the city. This property was once the estate of the House of Savoy.   After the fall of the Italian monarchy, this enchanting park became a public property of the Italian state. An area of the park hosts the Embassy and the Council of the Egyptian Republic. It remains one of the most pleasant Rome parks for a walk. During the summer season a music festival called “Rome meets the World” take place in the park, here all the info: Roma incontra il Mondo.

Villa Torlonia  belongs to the Torlonia family. It was designed by the well known architect, Giuseppe Valadier. It was abandoned for a certain time until Mussolini used it as his state residence for a couple of decades. After 1945, it was again abandoned, until a recent restoration gave back all the beauty to the villa, now open to the public.

Villa d’este – Villa adriana ( Tivoli)

Villa Adriana was built between 118 and 138 AD from Hadrian (Publius Aelius Hadrianus)
Adriano decided to move his residence outside the capital, choosing a green and water-rich territory, near Tivoli, 28 km from Rome,
The Villa includes residential buildings, spas, nymphaeums, pavilions, gardens that alternate according to a completely unusual distribution, which does not reflect the usual sequence of villas and imperial domus
Villa Adriana was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999

Villa d’Este  is a masterpiece of the Italian garden and part of  UNESCO  world heritage, with an impressive concentration of fountains, nymphaeums, caves and water games
Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, Governor of Tivoli since 1550, immediately caressed the idea of creating a garden along the  slope of the “Valle gaudente”. In 1605 Cardinal Alessandro d’Este started a new program of interventions for the restoration and repair of damage to vegetation and plumbing systems,
Other works were carried out in the years 1660 – 70, when Gianlorenzo Bernini himself was involved.

Civita di bagnoreggio

Located on the border of Umbria, in  the Tiber Valley, Civita di Bagnoregio is  squeezed between the two deep ravines of Rio Chiaro and Rio Torbido. It is part of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy.
For many years it became almost a ghost town, today  Civita di Bagnoregio is connected to its sister Bagnoregio, and to the “rest of the world”, through a very thin and long viaduct. It was rebuilt twice, after the demolition of the old masonry bridge, blown up by the Germans during the Second World War.
Entrance ticket prices to the Borgo
Every day of the year: € 5.00

The Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica is one of the largest and most famous in Italy, equal only to that of Pompei. Thanks to the nineteenth-century escavations, 34 hectares (out of 50 possible) are rebuilt. Ostia
It seems, according to tradition, that this was one of the first inhabited settlements in Rome (founded by Anco Marzio) therefore one of the oldest areas.
The excavations of Ostia Antica were begun, at the behest of Pius VII in 1800 and were carried out by Pius IX in 1909 with Vaglieri, Paribeni and Calza who helped to resurrect the Ancient Host from the dust of the soil that had buried it.
The excavations of Ostia Antica are located in Via dei Romagnoli 717 and can be easily reached with your own vehicle or by metro, taking the B line towards Laurentina up to Magliana and from here the train to Lido di Ostia up to Ostia Antica, cross the blue pedestrian overpass and go straight to the excavation gate (total time about half an hour).
