FROM SECRET WALKWAYS TO FRIGHTFUL PRISONS: CASTEL SANT’ANGELO BY NIGHT

Until 31 December Castel Sant’Angelo – the massive fortress built up in the Middle Age to ensure the Pope’s safety during invaders’ attacks – will surprise its visitors with a special opening schedule: every Friday night it will be accessible to public until 9pm.
This is not the only news though. Besides its museum, four of its sections usually restricted to public will be now open:
– the “Passetto”: a 800 m. long secret path connecting St. Peter’s Church to the castle itself;
Clement VII “stufetta”: unique example of Renaissance bathrooms;
– the prisons: many opponents of the Pope were imprisoned here in the past centuries;
– the garrisons’ mill: they open to visitors for the first time
