Franz Ferdinand in Rome

franzRock in Roma keeps getting better. Now they announce the legendary wirdos of Franz Ferdinand will stop by this year as a part of the Italian leg of their European tour.

We love the Glasgow band for their historic and artistic references: in case you weren’t paying attention during history class Franz Ferdinad was the archduke whose assassination led to the first world war. Also, the art of their albums is basically made of references to Soviet art, a fact that may go above the head of many but that becomes irrelevant given that all listeners may find common ground in the sheer fun of their music.

The Ferdinands wil play August 2, 2104 at 21:45 at the Capannelle racecourse.

Spring and the Azaleas of the Spanish Steps

spanishAs every spring from 1951 you will have the chance to admire one of the most beautiful sights the Eternal City has to offer: the stairs of the Spanish Steps will be embellished with flowerpots of azaleas as a colourful way to celebrate the arrival of the new season.

Why use Azaleas to celebrate spring? The answer, besides the fact that azaleas are beautiful and are in full flowering during April, is hard to guess. For some, the idea might be somehow connected to the legend of the Roman goddess Proserpine who escaped from her husband Pluto to go back to her mother Ceres, but due to a spell cast on her by her husband she had to spend six months on earth and the other six months in the underworld with him. According to the legend Proserpine, by going back to earth, gave start to spring and summer, while during the six months that she had to spend in the afterlife autumn and winter arrived on earth.250px-Proserpine-(utdrag)

The dates can slightly vary in operation of the flowering of the azaleas, but the office of the tourism will provide all the necessary information.

If you’ll be in Rome in that period don’t miss this opportunity!!! The Spanish Steps are waiting to celebrate with you! Book at the Hotel Des Artistes or Yes Hotel located only a walk away from the Spanish Steps!

Frida Khalo at the Scuderia dei Quirinale

Frida_Kahlo_(self_portrait)

An exhibition that explores the whole of her artistic career. Pure masterpieces from public and private collections in Mexico, Europe and the United States. Self depiction is the central theme, with more than forty fabulous portraits, including: Self portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird (for the first time in Italy).

Frida is the very symbol of an artistic avant-garde of Mexican culture in the 20th century. Always rebel, her works mix the most important cultural movements of her period: Revolutionary Pauperism, Stridentism, Surrealism and Magical Realism.

The exhibition hosts also works from other artists who were active during the period including of course her husband, Diego Rivera (Portrait of Natasha Gelman, 1943 and Nude, 1930 among others) and also Jose Clemente Orozco, Jose David Alfaro Siqueiros and Maria Izquierdo.
